Every time I turn around, they're always asking for extra money and putting students in debt of hours to complete the program. They're crooks.

I've been going to this Beauty School for years, since 2014. I would get my hair dyed, my hair blow dried and flattened, sometimes I would get a trim or a cut. I've also gotten a buzzcut from them as well.
From 2014-2017 this beauty school was top notch. They taught stylists about different hair textures and I always left satisfied.
Since 2017 management has changed twice or thrice I believe and it has been terrible with every switch so I would only go maybe once to twice a year and be okay with the service (I'd have to go home and re-straighten my hair usually).
This visit (April 2023) was the worst one. I went in to bleach and cut my hair but Ms. Q, Ms Karen, and I think Wendy would not listen to me every single time tried to explain what I wanted. When I mentioned I wanted to cut my shoulder-length hair to a short afro they would interject and tell me not to. I couldn't even get through my sentence of asking for the hairstyle I would like. When I repeatedly tried to tell them that I've dyed my hair before and chopping my hair and then bleaching would be easier, they again ignored me and continued to try and bleach my hair leaving my ends dry and pink from the ginger dye I had from a few years back. I grew increasingly frustrated because they ignored me (even though I know my hair best) and kept damaging my hair by doing several applications of bleach. It took me raising my voice to get them to pause and listen to me. And when I explained again that it would be easier to give me a haircut instead of trying to lighten my ends the head hairstylist (Q, Karen or Wendy) grabbed the scissors and without warning or asking at what length I would like my hair began chopping at my hair. When I exclaimed that she didn't ask what length I wanted, she then turned to me and asked "well what length do you want", I had to tell her to never mind because she already chopped off my hair on one side of my head. I left and a month later went to a different salon to fix this school's mistakes.
I understand this is a beauty school but if even the head hairstylist (who already should have their degree/ certificate and years of experience) can't properly do hair then it clearly indicates how terrible this place has become.
I honestly hope with all of my heart that they go out of business, the prices have gone up, the service has gone down, the head stylists are clearly in the wrong profession as well.
I'm very sad to see a neighborhood staple go, but go it
must.
Edit:
@American Beauty School - 1) I have been going to this location since 2014 and I have seen a change in management SEVERAL times. 2) This review is only posted once more on yelp to inform patrons to not support this establishment. To lie and claim that I am “negative-bombing” under multiple names and posts is absurd. 3) This person is called Ms. Q. That you do not know that this person was employed in April 2023 shows more about your management, American Beauty School. This person was not a professional and damaged my hair under the guise of being the head stylist. 4) If you would like to repair that in any way, you can offer me a full refund for the damage done. Or you can acknowledge that instead of seeking further action against this establishment, I instead chose to inform the public of the disservice provided. Please be more informed the next time you reply.

Editor's Description
The American Beauty School is one of the oldest and most established beauty schools in the city, with a strong 50-year history. It's conveniently located in the Bronx area, making it easily accessible from Westchester, Queens, and Yonkers. With a full ground floor level clinic at their disposal, students can practice on a wide range of hair types and textures and gain real-world salon skills.
The school's 1,000-hour cosmetology program covers everything students need for a career in beauty, including hair, skincare, makeup, and business development. A 250-hour nail technician program is also available.
Alumna Steph enjoyed her time at the school, saying, "If you keep a positive and motivated attitude you will not be disappointed. The instructors are highly skilled and dedicated to our success."
