Started at this school in September 2023. The owner enrolled me the same day I called and had me start almost the very next week. I know this because I received an email of my enrollment thru the VA. I went to this school for about 2 weeks but from day 1 I knew I made a mistake because it was so unorganized. Tried to give them some grace because they were in the process of moving into their new location. But once over at the new location, It was the same as day one when it came down to learning. I started asking some of the other students how the school was but no one could really give me straight answer. I started asking about books and a barber kit, but once again, I could never get a straight answer form anyone. They did speak highly of Mr. Belt, and my encounters with him were very pleasant, but my issues were beyond the encounters. For one, when I finally did receive a book, it was an old used one that they seem to share, they kept saying that the books were at the new location but once we got there, I still didn't receive a book, I didn't receive a kit, a mannequin head, clippers, nothing. He asked me if I had my own upon starting and I told him I had a few items from a kit I got from a previous cosmetology school, but he sent into the VA that the cost of tuition was around $20,000. I know this from my COE Letter. But on the website, his price for his school is listed at $4,600 which includes the cost of the kits, books and tuition. So if they received a payout for each veteran student, including myself, then why didn't I receieve any of the items listed on the website?
This really bothers me because this school is listed on the GI Bill School tool, which is why I went with them, but in the end. I guess you really have to go do your own research and check out the school for yourself.
I informed him back in October that I would no longer be attending the school and requested that he submit my withdrawal to the VA. He ensured me that he had submitted it on 2 separate occasions, but when I would call into the VA, the kept saying that one was not submitted.
The VA then reached out to him in email and asked him to submit the withdrawal, that was in December 2023. Yet, no withdrawal has been submitted and it is now January 2024. They have since opened a case against the school for their own investigation. But I honestly feel that this school is a complete SCAM.
The lady I think her name is Ms. Debbie, is a retired barber, she goes over the pages in the book, I guess that's how they teach there. She reads the pages and then have student answer questions in the back of the chapter. I didn't receive any "hands-on" learning, and once she read thru the book, we were expected to take an exam and go to the next chapter within 2 days ! Once again, NO HANDS ON LEARNING !!
I took and exam within my first few days, and they gave me an exam paper, I had no clue that I was not supposed to write on it, but I did and they about lost it. I guess because they use the same copy and just have student write the answers on a sheet of notebook paper and turn it in. It was never graded, they had me put it a my file inside of a filing cabinet for "records". This was another red flag.
I was completely done after that, so I packed my stuff and left the old used book on the desk and never returned.
I hate to leave negative reviews, but when it comes down to right and wrong, I am always on the side of right, regardless of how a person "seems" to be.
Veterans please do your research before starting any of these hair/barber schools in and around Atlanta. They prey on us because they know that they can line their pockets with OUR benefits.
**UPDATE & RESPONSE TO THIS SCHOOL’S RESPONSE**
5 months later and I finally receive a BOGUS response.. it’s been almost a whole year Later since this incident occurred and just now hearing feedback…
But looking back at the other reviews from students at this school.. I can honestly see that I’m not the only VETERAN that feels this way..
