You must attend a school that meets any licensure requirements as defined by your state. Most states require that you graduate from an accredited or state-approved school.

What to Expect From a Hair Design School in Nevada

A Nevada hair design program consists of 1,000 hours covering:

  • Blow drying
  • Chemical straightening
  • Finger waving
  • Hair color and cutting
  • Infection control and prevention
  • Nevada law
  • Permanent waving
  • Salon management, dispensary, reception desk
  • Scalp treatment
  • Shampoo services
  • Theory
  • Thermal straightening and curling
  • Wet hairdressing
  • Wigs and hairpieces

If you want to offer services beyond hair, such as manicuring and skin care, then attending cosmetology school and earning your cosmetology license may be the better route. However, you can always start as a hairdresser and attend a shorter cosmetology program in the future.

Nevada Hair Design Apprenticeship

Instead of hair school, you can complete your training with a 2,000-hour hair design apprenticeship. You must submit an application and pay the $100 fee before beginning your training.

Hair License Tests in Nevada

After finishing your hair designer training, you're ready to take your licensure exams — a practical demonstration, theory test, and state law exam covering legal and consumer protection requirements within the beauty industry.

The practical test covers:

  • Basic setup
  • Layered haircut
  • Permanent wave
  • Color retouch
  • Virgin relaxer
  • Blood exposure procedure

The theory test includes the following:

  • Infection control and safety
  • Hair and scalp structure and care
  • Haircutting
  • Hairstyling
  • Hair color and lightening
  • Permanent waving
  • Chemical hair relaxing

Be sure to bring your ID and other required paperwork to the test, but leave everything else at home—no items (or people) are allowed in the testing room with you.

Nevada Hair Designer License Requirements

To get your Nevada hair design license, in addition to completing your hairdresser education, you must:

  • Be at least 18 years old
  • Be of good moral character
  • Have completed 10th grade or the equivalent
  • Pass licensure exams
  • Submit an application and pay the $125 testing fee

If you've been convicted of a felony, include a letter to the board's executive director explaining the incident and what you've learned from it. No felony will automatically deny you licensure, but you need board approval to move forward.

Hair License Renewal in Nevada

You must renew your hair designer license every two or four years in Nevada before the expiration date (your birthday or date of issuance).

To renew, complete four hours of continuing education about infection control and prevention, submit an application, and pay the $70 (two years) or $140 (four years) renewal fee.

Nevada Hair Design License Reciprocity

If you're a licensed hair designer from another state, you may be able to transfer your license to Nevada through reciprocity.

To qualify, you must:

  • Submit a reciprocity application and pay the $325 fee
  • Have an active license in good standing
  • Pass the Nevada law exam
  • Send a license certification, depending on the state you are from

Hair Designer Salary in Nevada

The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) said that in 2022, hairdressers, hairstylists, and cosmetologists in Nevada earned an average of $28,910 annually ($13.90 hourly). However, the BLS uses only data from employers. Self-employed hair professionals aren't factored in. Plus, this number includes people who work as cosmetologists.

Additionally, your pay is affected by location, type of workplace, years of experience, and more. The best way to determine how much you could earn is to talk to other hair professionals near you.
