You must attend a school that meets any licensure requirements as defined by your state. Most states require that you graduate from an accredited or state-approved school.

What You Can Do With Your Ohio Hair Design License

With a hair design or advanced hair design license, you can shampoo, cut, color, and style hair. You should have a strong foundation in customer service and be dedicated to hair and scalp care.

Unlike a cosmetology license, you can't perform additional services like nail design, skincare, or makeup application. If you want to focus exclusively on haircare services, hair design school may be your best option.

However, a cosmetology license may be a better fit if you're looking to offer a broader range of services, whether in a salon or as a freelancer. Finding a beauty-related job that aligns with your personality can help you follow your passion.

Ohio Hair Design and Advanced Hair Design School

Hair design school is based on a 1,000-hour curriculum. During the program, you'll balance learning theory and practical subjects, including:

  • Chemical procedures
  • General sciences
  • Haircutting
  • Hair practices and styles (including shampooing, wet styling, thermal styling, braiding, formal styling, wigs)
  • Properties of the hair and scalp (trichology)
  • Salon operation and communications

If you'd like to broaden your skillset, the 240-hour advanced hair design curriculum offers training in more advanced techniques. Both programs focus on health and safety to ensure you and your clients have the best possible experience.

Should I Consider Cosmetology School as an Ohio Hairstylist?

If you already have or are pursuing a hair design license, you may consider an Ohio cosmetology license. This license allows you to perform additional services like nail care, skincare, and makeup application. You can complete a 500-hour course to help you to fulfill cosmetology licensure requirements.

Getting Your Ohio Hair Design or Advanced Hair Design License

To get your license in Ohio, you must complete your 1,000-hour training course and take a written and practical exam. You must pay the exam fee of $40 plus the license fee of $45. The hair design theory written exam consists of 100 multiple-choice questions covering everything you should have learned in your hair school program. The advanced hair design written exam comprises 50 multiple-choice questions in cosmetology law, public safety, advanced hair techniques, and communication and sales skills.

For the practical exam, be prepared to showcase your abilities with the following techniques:

  • Set up and client safety
  • Thermal curling
  • Haircutting
  • Chemical wave
  • Hair color retouch
  • Foil highlighting
  • Relaxer retouch
  • Chemical virgin relaxer

Once you have a license, you must pay an annual $55 renewal fee and provide proof of additional training. Continuing education (CE) credits are required when you renew your license, with a few exceptions. CE requirements include a one-hour board laws and rules course and a three-hour infection control and safety course.

Ohio Hairstylist Salary
